Planning and Engineering

“It actually took longer to walk down the system to set the jumper switches on the instruments than it took to commission the system.“
ICA Manager at a chemical plant, after commissioning a plant with FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1, USA

Planning the fieldbus infrastructure for FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1 or PROFIBUS PA follows well-known concepts and procedures: selection of instrumentation and control technology, planning of cable trays, control cabinets, fieldbus junction boxes, and—when necessary—the layout for potentially hazardous areas.

Differences arise during the design phase for the infrastructure. The following planning steps are considered based on the selected control technology, instrumentation, and cable route planning:

The bus cycle time influences the response time of control loops and have to be taken into consideration, too. For this purpose, calculation tools in the control system are available.
